Why People Hate Their Headshots (and How Guided Posing Fixes It)

5 MIN READ·JUL 8, 2026

The most common sentence heard in this studio, usually within the first two minutes: "I'm just not photogenic." After ten years and thousands of sessions, I can tell you almost nobody who says that is right. What they are is undirected, and there's a fix for that.

Why you flinch at your own photos

Two things are working against you before the camera even clicks. First, the mirror: you've spent your whole life looking at a flipped version of your face, and a photograph shows the version everyone else sees. The small asymmetries land in unfamiliar places, so your brain files the photo under "wrong", even though it's the more accurate one.

Second, photos freeze a single millisecond of a face that's meant to move. Casual snapshots are full of in-between expressions (half-blinks, mid-word mouths) that nobody would ever notice in conversation. A portrait session exists precisely to catch the intended frames instead of the accidental ones.

"Just act natural" is the worst instruction in photography

Think about what happens when someone points a camera at you and says "relax!" Your hands become foreign objects. Your weight settles evenly on both feet, which humans never do naturally. You hold your breath. You produce the smile you think a smile looks like. Vague encouragement gives your brain nothing to do except monitor itself, and that tension photographs loudly.

What guided posing actually looks like

In a guided session you're never left guessing. Every frame comes with direction: shift your weight to the back foot, drop that shoulder an inch, bring your chin out and slightly down, give your hands a specific job, breathe out. Now hold. Between frames the adjustments are tiny, often two centimetres at a time. You don't need to know any of this before you arrive; that's the whole point of hiring someone who does.

The screen changes everything

Every image lands on a screen moments after it's taken, and we look together. This is where the nerves actually dissolve: you see the chin adjustment working, you stop guessing what the camera is getting, and you have a say in the result while we can still act on it. Favourites get picked in the room, not from a proof gallery a week later when it's too late to change anything.

The takeaway: "Photogenic" is mostly direction, not genetics. If every photo of you was taken without any, of course you hate them. Curious what a guided session feels like from the chair? Read a first-timer’s honest account, then how to prepare when you’re ready.
