Getting ready for a professional headshot session is more than just showing up with a smile. To make sure you get the perfect shots, it's important to be prepared. Here are five things that will help you nail your next session and get photos you'll love.
Even if you're not a makeup person, a little touch-up can make a huge difference. Bring your makeup essentials and brushes for quick fixes, and hair products (gel, hairspray, even a straightener) to keep everything in place. We want your hair looking great and your makeup staying fresh so every shot is picture-perfect.
I can't tell you how many times clients come with just one outfit and wish they had more choices! Extra wardrobe options add real variety to your session. Whether your headshots are for LinkedIn, your company's website, or publications, different outfits showcase different sides of your personality, and it's fun to mix things up.
Having a friend along can be super helpful. They'll catch the little details (like that one stray hair) and offer moral support. A familiar face makes it easier to relax and feel confident, which leads to more natural, engaging photos. And they'll definitely laugh at my jokes, which, trust me, are worth it.
Music sets the tone for the whole session. Put together a playlist of songs that put you at ease. The right tunes can turn the session into a mini dance party, and who doesn't love that? We might even discover we have the same taste in music.
Sample images are like giving me a sneak peek into your ideal headshot. Whether they're of you or someone else, save examples on your phone to guide the session. Love something from my portfolio? Show me. See styles you don't like? Share those too. It all helps me tailor the session so you walk away thrilled.
Bonus tip: skip the tanning sprays. A little glow is great, but tanning sprays can create uneven tones or streaks in photos. Stick with your natural skin tone for the most flattering results.
Preparation is key to capturing your most professional and authentic self. For the days leading up to your session, see my full session-prep guide. Let's make some magic happen!
