Choosing the Perfect Colors for Your Skin Tone

MAR 25, 2025·5 MIN READ·BY VOLKAN CAGLAR

Selecting the right colors for your wardrobe and makeup can significantly enhance your natural beauty, especially when preparing for a professional headshot. The key is understanding your skin's undertone. Here's how to determine yours, and how to choose colors that suit you best.

What are skin undertones?

Undertones are the subtle hues beneath the surface of your skin that influence how colors appear on you. There are three primary undertones:

Identifying your undertone helps you select colors that harmonize with your natural coloring. On camera, that translates directly into a complexion that looks healthy and awake.

Four ways to find your undertone

1. The vein test

Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural light. Greenish veins suggest warm undertones; blue or purple suggest cool; if you see both, you're likely neutral.

2. The jewelry test

Consider whether you look better in silver or gold. Silver tends to complement cool undertones, while gold flatters warm ones. Neutral undertones can usually wear both convincingly.

3. The sun test

Think about how your skin reacts to sun. Tanning easily points to warm undertones; burning quickly points to cool. A mix of both suggests neutral.

4. The clothing test

Hold different fabrics (white, off-white, cream) up to your face in natural light. Notice which shades make your complexion glow and which make it look dull or tired.

Colors that flatter each undertone

Warm undertones

Reach for: earthy tones: orange, honey, amber, gold, olive, and turquoise. Approach with care: very vibrant cool tones like deep red and indigo, which can compete with your natural warmth.

Cool undertones

Reach for: jewel and cool tones: sapphire blue, emerald, ruby, lavender, and cool grays. Approach with care: orange and golden yellows, which can wash cool complexions out.

Neutral undertones

Lucky you: most shades work. Softened, slightly muted versions of any color (dusty pink, jade, cream, slate) tend to photograph especially well; extremely neon shades are the main thing to avoid.

Final thoughts

These guidelines make wardrobe choices easier, but personal preference still matters most. Wear colors that make you feel comfortable and confident; that confidence shows up in photographs more than any color theory does.
