Getting ready for a professional headshot is an exciting step toward enhancing your personal brand. To ensure you look and feel your best, it's important to prepare thoughtfully in the days leading up to your session. Here are key recommendations to help you achieve a standout headshot.
In the days before your session, focus on eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Limit salty and fatty foods, which can lead to bloating and sluggishness, affecting how you feel and look.
Drinking plenty of water is crucial for keeping your skin hydrated and vibrant. Proper hydration helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and gives your skin a healthy glow.
Aim for at least 7–8 hours of quality sleep the night before your session. Adequate rest minimizes dark circles and puffiness, letting you appear refreshed and alert.
Refrain from alcohol for at least 48 hours before your session. Alcohol dehydrates your skin and eyes, leading to a dull complexion and redness. Staying alcohol-free keeps your features clear and vibrant.
Excessive sun can result in tan lines or sunburn that are difficult to correct in post-production. If you plan to be outdoors, apply sunscreen, and consider scheduling your session at least a week after significant sun exposure.
Ensure your hair is clean, styled, and trimmed as desired; facial hair should be well-groomed. Clean, manicured nails contribute to a polished appearance, especially in three-quarter poses where hands show.
Choose solid colors and avoid busy patterns or large logos that distract from your face. Clothing should be clean, well-fitted, and wrinkle-free. Bring multiple options; my wardrobe guide and color guide can help you choose.
Keep jewelry and accessories subtle so the focus remains on your face: pieces that complement your attire without competing with it.
Discuss your goals and preferences beforehand. Sharing examples of headshots you admire helps align expectations and guides the session toward your desired outcome.
The short version: thoughtful preparation not only enhances your appearance, it also boosts your confidence in front of the camera, and that shows in every frame.
