When to Book Graduation Portraits in BC

4 MIN READ·APR 29, 2026

Every May the studio gets the same call: "The ceremony is in three weeks. Can we still get portraits?" Sometimes yes. But the spring calendar filled in February, and the families who called then got the blossom weekends, the golden evenings, and their pick of dates. Here's the timeline, working backwards.

The BC grad calendar

Ceremonies across the Lower Mainland land in late May and June. Proms and formals run through May. And the one that surprises parents: many schools set their yearbook photo deadline between January and March. Check that deadline first; it overrides everything else on this page.

The sweet spot: book January–February, shoot March–April

Booking early in the year means the gown and stole are arranged in time, the parks and campuses are waking up, April brings blossoms, and you're ahead of the ceremony-season rush. Evening light stretches late enough for after-school sessions, which is when most grads actually want to shoot. One weather note: March and April here are a coin flip, so every outdoor booking carries a studio fallback, so the date holds either way.

The fall window

September–October of grad year is the calm alternative: portraits ready for early university applications, scholarship files, and a LinkedIn profile that doesn't use a cropped group photo. Fall colour is a bonus. It's also the zero-pressure choice if you'd rather not think about photos during the spring crunch.

One session, two stories

The formula that works: half the session in cap and gown for the wall and the grandparents, half in the grad's own style: the person, not just the milestone. Parents, take the ten-minute family add-on at the end. Everyone is already dressed, and it quietly becomes the first full family photo in years.

Booking checklist

The takeaway: If the ceremony is in June, January-you is the hero of this story. Book early, shoot in spring light, and keep fall in your pocket as the calm plan B.
